Rezensionen
Für alle, die nicht länger auf das nächste reguläre Studioalbum von King Crimson warten mochten, hatte der "wohlmeinende Diktator" (Selbsteinschätzung des Gitarristen) Fripp eine halbstündige musikalische Postkarte vorbereitet, einen kleinen Einblick in die nächste Zukunft von King Crimson. (Mit anderen Worten: Was "Vroom" für "Thrak" war, sollte "Happy with what you have to be happy with" für "The Power to believe" werden).
Nach dem monolithischen Meisterwerk "ConstruKction of Light" wirken die Vorabversuche von "Happy with what you have to be happy with" auf mich reichlich unentschlossen, oder etwas positiver formuliert, ebenso abwechslungsreich wie wenig "crimsonisch". Falls dies die neue Art von "Crimsonising" (ein Ausdruck von Fripp fürs Musikmachen mit dieser Band) sein sollte, klingt sie für mich doch sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig und streckenweise allzu stark von Rock-Mainstream (im Sinne von Blues oder Metal) beeinflußt.
Bunter geht es wohl kaum: Prog-Metal des Titeltracks, Soundscapes von "Mie Gekure", Belew-Ballade "Eyes wide open", Blues-Rock von "Potato Pie", die urtümlichen Glocken/Xylophon-ähnlichen (oder was auch immer da gesampelt wurde) Klänge von "Shoganai" (so heißt die vorliegende Scheibe in Japan), und schließlich noch eine Einspielung von "Larks' tongues in aspic Part IV" (diesmal wurde die vokale Aufzählung der Katastrophen des 20en Jahrhunderts, "Coda: I have a dream", in der nach Belews Weltbild Lady Di gleich neben Vietnam, Napalm und John Lennons tragischem
Ableben auftauchte, glücklicherweise durch Instrumentales ersetzt). Zwischen den ebengenannten Stücken säuselt immer wieder melancholisch, insgesamt vier Mal, wie durch einen digitalen Vocoder gejagte Stimme von Belew, scheinbar um den doch sehr unterschiedlichen Fragmenten etwas Zusammenhang zu verleihen. Und, wie könnte es anders sein, nach kurzer Pause kommt natürlich noch was. Diesmal sind es schlicht und einfach chaotische Studio-Blödeleien, was nicht abwertend gemeint ist. (Diese "Blödeleien" werden unter Fachleuten als hidden track "Einstein's relatives" bezeichnet).
Unter dem Strich bekommt man auf dieser Scheibe einige woanders nicht vorhandene Stücke, so dass die Anschaffung für die Fans lohnenswert erscheint. Für mich bleibt "Happy with what you have to be happy with" eine sehr konfuse Zusammenstellung, die man wohl besser doch nicht allzu ernst nehmen sollte.
